The Oscars

The 28th Academy Awards held at the RKO Pantages Theatre on Wednesday, March 21, 1956, honoring movies released in 1955. The show was telecast on NBC-TV, again as a bicoastal affair. Jerry Lewis was the host in Hollywood and Claudette Colbert and Joseph L. Mankiewicz hosted at New York's NBC Century Theatre. This show was Grace Kelly's last public appearance before heading to New York and then on to Monaco for her wedding to Prince Rainier. James Dean was the first actor posthumously nominated for an Academy Award. He had died in a car accident on September 30, 1955, at the age of 24.
