Sunday Night Heat Overview

Volume 4, Issue 446 - March 29, 1999
Editor's Note After experimenting for several months with breaking the Monday Night Wars Edition into two parts I have decided to go back to publishing it as one edition on Monday Nights. Trying to do two editions in two days, then having situations like this weekend which forced me to do three editions in three days was just too much. We'll try it like this for a while and see how it goes.

Heat Overview

Heat, of course, comes to us live from the First Union Center in Philadelphia. PA - site of WrestleMania XV. Vince McMahon comes down with Paul Wight to open the show with a rant. The announcers are (somewhat ironically) touting "the Big Show" as "Corporate through and through..." McMahon re-affirms his vow to prevent Steve Austin from regaining the WWF Title at the PPV. He announces a No-DQ stip for the match and declares that Wight will be the referee for the main event. Wight has a few words of his own and addresses Mrs. Mick Foley - telling her she better take a good look at her husband because when he (Wight) is finished with him, she won't recognize him. He tells Austin that we're going to find out if he is really the "toughest SOB in the WWF" and he (Wight) is going to wait by the backdoor for him to arrive.

Later in the back, McMahon is telling Wight (who is sitting in a chair near the back door) that he needs to have a main event - so please don't destroy Austin before the match!

Jaqueline (w/Terri Runnels) faced Ivory in a ladies match. The match seems pretty even between the two. Jaquie has the power advantage but Ivory clearly knows her way around the ring. Jaquie finally used a power move - a suplex to get the pin. Terri then enters the ring and burns Ivory's face with her cigar. Tori runs in to clear the ring and help Ivory.

DX came out for some words. All the members hype their respective matches on the PPV card.

The feature match on the card was a Tag Team Battle Royal to choose a team to face the pissed Brothers for their Title's at WrestleMania. Participants included: Test, the Godfather, Steve Blackman, D'Lo Brown, Droz, the Acolytes, Viscera, Mideon, Tiger Ali Singh, the Legion of Doom (w/Paul Ellering), Gillberg (a joke entry), the Hardy Boys, Public Enemy, Too Much and the DOA. The entire compliment attacked PE to start and eliminated them immediately. Hawk actually looked pretty good until Bradshaw eliminated him. In the end, of course, we ended up with Test and D'Lo as the team that faced (and lost to) the Tag Champs in the opening match at the PPV.

The Bossman had an experience that presaged what would happen to him later in the evening. He came out for an interview but then the lights went out and he received a bloodbath.

In the back, Mankind decided to insult the Big Show as he passed him on his way into the building and ended up getting creamed (he went to the hospital after the attack). Meanwhile, in the background, we see Austin coming in unmolested.

Nitro Report

David and Torie are sitting in front of a fire trashing his dad and glorifying Hollywood Hogan. Cut to the arena and a Volkwagen Beetle being given away in a contest. The announcers are talking about Bret Hart's statement last week wherein he opined that he could beat Goldberg in five minutes. They cut to the video - sure enough - he said it. Hmmm...the show's in Canada...I wonder... Cut to commercial.

We return to the unrevised version of the latest Konnan video then cut to the arena where Konnan is making his entrance. He goes into his rap (rant) until he is interrupted by Vincent who says he has been assigned to take Konnan out. He jumps right on the apron to get in Konnan's face and is dragged into the ring and trashed. Eventually, Vincents manages to pull down the top rope at the right moment and sends Konnan tumbling to the floor. He follows him out and retains his advantage then rolls him back in. Vincent maintains his advantage but Konnan is growing stronger and gradually gaining ground. Soon Vincent is having to resort to eye shots to keep ahead. He traps his opponent on the apron and drops an elbow across his chest. Konnan is coming back when Stevie Ray appears in the aisle to distract Vincent. Konnan blindsides his opponent and puts the Tequilla Sunrise on to win. Cut to video of Hogan with Torie discussing their plot against the Flairs. Hogan spins out an incredible tale concerning the epic battle between himself and Kevin Nash for the WCW World Title... Cut to commercial.

Nitro is live from The Air Canada Center in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Mean Gene welcomes Hogan to the ring. He interviews him in face mode - he seems to have no problems with anything Hollywood's doing these days. Hogan claims that he won the match at Uncensored and "where's my stinking belt?" He wants Ric Flair tonight - what else..?He says he has the nWo out combing the building for Flair. He is mixing his Hulkamania cliches with his Wolf Pac cliches as he rants for several minutes. The announcers are floating the rumor that Sting is in the area tonight as we cut to commercial.

We return to a Goldberg tribute video. Tony is on Sting again. He is speculating about what Sting will look like, etc. Cut to a taped interview with Diamond Dallas Page conducted by Mike Tenay. He says that Kimberly is doing fine and that he suffered a herniated disc and had to go through rehab. When Tenay presses him about his travails DDP cuts him off and disabuses him of any sympathetic urges. He plans to get Steiner on his own terms.

Wrath vs. Kenny Kaos - a young vs. an older lion - both of these guys are hungry. Could be a good contest. Sure enough Kaos shows himself to be no pushover. Everytime Wrath turns him loose he comes back with a shot or two. The bottom line is that he can't possibly pin the guy and as frustration sets in he runs into an upraised boot. The fight goes out to the floor where Wrath manhandles his opponent until Kaos blocks a shot to the rail and reverses it. They struggle to the apron and Wrath smashes Kaos into the apron. Back in the ring, it is all Wrath. He beats on the guy for a while then hauls him over to the apron and pounds on him some more. This time when he turns Kaos loose he completes gets the clothesline on the rebound. Kaos gets a arm-bar drop for his last offensive flurry which ends when he walks into the Death Penalty followed by the Meltdown. Great match.

Now we have Nash with Torrie. This is following a familiar pattern. She's questoning him about the big title match as well. He is surprised that Hogan says the match was for real. Torrie indicates that she has seen a tape of the "match." Nash wants to know if Torrie thinks Hogan could beat him. She prefers not to answer. Cut to commercial.

Mean Gene is in the ring to interview Ric Flair. There is a good mix of cheers and boos for him as he comes down. Okerlund gets right into it and asks Flair about Hogan's challenge. El Presidente ignores the question and goes into an anti-Canada rant then announces a surprise appearance by Diamond Dallas Page to make a presentation to the president of WCW. They trade some good natured barbs at each other but underlying it all is animosity. DDP wants a match with Scott Steiner. He then turns to the crowd and hurls his own insult to the Canadians! Flair says "you want Steiner and Hogan wants me..." so he makes a match between DDP and Hogan. Hogan shows up and they trade challenges. Hogan leaves. Flair tells DDP that he (Flair) will ensure DDP's victory by being his manager tonight. Page is telling Flair to stuff it when Sting appears in the rafters to break up the conversation. He is back to his white face character...too bad... Cut to commercial.

Our first look at the Nitro Grrrrrls (in gold lame) tonight comes eleven minutes after the beginning of the second hour.

Scott Norton vs. Rick Steiner - in a match against a wrestling machine like Steiner, Norton has nothing but limitless power on his side. Steiner capitalizes on every mistake the big man makes. The result is largely a standoff and Norton is pacing around on the floor as we cut to commercial.

Both guys are out on their feet in the ring as we return. They gain their feet and trade power moves. It's all in slow motion now until Norton reaches out a finger to stab Steiner's eye. The Dogface falls out of the ring. Norton follows him out only to be smashed into the ringpost four times! Back in the ring, Steiner mounts the corner and gets the bulldog from the top to take the pin. Good match but too short because of the damn commercial in the middle!

Rey Misterio is urging Kidman to help him challenge for the World tag Team Titles. Kidman is hesitant, recalling his experience with Chavo Guererro, but finally agrees. Cut to commercial.

Chris Adams vs. Booker T - Television Title match - Booker handles things easily in the early going. Adams comes back with a hip toss. Booker credits him for the shot then dances around the challenger before putting him down hard. Adams offers a handshake and Booker accepts. He then backs the Champ into the corner and takes a cheap shot. Booker drags him out to the center and creams him with an ax kick. The match goes to the floor where Adams grabs the initiative and plants Booker with a super-kick on the concrete. Back in the ring, Adams tries to hold Booker down. Then gives up and lays a powerbomb on him! Adams sees his chance and he's taking it! A series of kicks marks Booker's comeback and now Adams is on the receiving end again. Booker ends it with a missle drop-kick.

More Nitro Grrrrls on the ramp...with hats...I heard today that Nitro Grrrrls Whisper is engaged to Shawn Michaels. Gosh! She's my favorite...

Jerry Flynn vs. Chris Jericho - well, now we'll see what kind of push Flynn is getting. Jericho reminds the crowd that he is 100% Canadian...then turns around and says that Canada sucks! What is this..? Bash Canada night..?? Flynn comes on strong at the top of the contest but Jericho is too skillfull to be kept down too long. Jericho turns the tide in moments. He dominates for a couple of minutes then misses a drop-kick and gets caught in a submission hold. Flynn turns him loose and pays for the error as Jericho turns it back around. Jericho flies and Flyyn catches him in mid-air with a sidekick. Now the match is in see-saw mode until Jericho catches his opponent in the corner and pins him with an assist from the ropes.

Mean Gene is with Spice and the beetle - she drapes herself on it while he hawks the contest. Cut to commercial...pulease!

Bret Hart saunters out to the cheers of the homecountry crowd. He smiles faintly as the crowd pours out its love and respect. He mentions that "everybodies upset about the ratings..." but he's not - he starts his rant by quoting the lyrics of "Oh Canada" thn launches into his classic whine about not getting any World title shots since coming to WCW and reiterates his challenge directed at Goldberg. He mentions the Goldberg $100,000 challenge to Steve Austin (even calls Stone Cold by name) and then reminds us that he beat Austin every time he faced him (and he did too...) Goldberg shows up to his customary pop enters the ring and immediately spears the Hitman! They are both knocked cold!! Their pose entangled with each other is almost obscene. Hart comes to but Goldberg is still unconscious. He rolls over and pins the monster and then administers his own count - 1-2-3! He did pin Goldberg in under five minutes. He gets up and tears off his shirt - he's wearing a metal plate over his midsection!!! He grabs the mic and calls out to Eric Bischoff saying,"I Quit!" then stalks from the ring. He barely pauses to argue with JJ Dillon as he passes out of the arena. Cut to commercial.

In a replay we see that Bischoff came out and confronted Hart during the break.

Buff Bagwell comes down to do his first rant since the big split last week. His opponent is Norman Smiley - damn I was just getting used to not seeing this idiot every week. Smiley is not Buff - and he is not the stuff... Buff thinks this match is a joke so Smiley tries hard to dispell that notion. He knocks Bagwell to the floor then turns to pose for the crowd. Bagwell bails back in and Smiley in knocked to the floor on the other side of the ring. Smiley comes back in and starts trying to work on a leg but Bagwell is way ahead of him until he goes for a splash and lands on Smiley's knees. Smiley gets his swinging slam then does a little of his wiggle. Now he is in control for the first time in the match. Bagwell fights back but Smiley has his number. Tony is doing French procunciations of Bagwell's name... Smiley is starting to concentrate on Bagwell's pre-injured neck. Here Norman shines and it starts to look bad for Bagwell until Smilety misses a drop-kick. From there they are about three moves away from the Blockbuster and a win for Bagwell. Cut to commercial.

Chris Benoit/Dean Malenko vs. Rey Misterio, Jr./Kidman - WCW Tag Team Title match - this match has epic potential. Benoit starts the match with Kidman and Benoit dominates from the get-go. He is in buzz saw mode and Kidman is feeling the buzz (so to speak). Kidman finally comes back with a powerbomb then both sides change off. Malenko steamrolls over Misterio then grabs a reverse chinlock. The change is made and Misterio is being isolated in classic Horsemen style. Misterio takes to the air to turn the tables but he can't sustain his attack against the power of Benoit. Malenko comes in and goes for the Texas Cloverleaf on the seemingly helpless Rey - who turns out to be playing possum! He upsets the Tag Champ then tags Kidman in. Kidman is on the receiving end at first but then turns things around just as we head into commercial.

Benoit has Kidman under control again as we return. He tags Malenko who gets a big vertical suplex. He hauls Kidman up and drops him in a belly-to-back. Benoit comes in and they double team on a flap jack slam. Benoit stays in to punish Kidman some more by dropping him onto the top rope stomach first. Kidman is tossed to the floor where Malenko does a number on him. Back in the ring they go for another double elevation but Kidman gets a doubel drop-kick on them. A brawl on the outside has the referee distracted as Saturn and Raven come to the ring. Raven goes right into the ring and puts the evenflo on Malenko! Rey Jr. gets the pin. Misterio and Kidman are the new Tag Team Champs!!

Michael Buffer introduces the main event.

Hollywood Hogan vs. Diamond Dallas Page (w/Ric Flair) - the match starts as a pier-six brawl - something that both of these dinasours do very well. Page is knocked to the floor and is being ordered back into the ring by Flair as we cut to commercial.

The fight has moved up to the broadcast position as we return!! Page is stomping a mudhole in his opponent. They battle over to the WCW letters after tearing up the announce table. They push over the letters on one side - of course - they're getting ready to redecorate the set next week. Back in the ring (somehow) Hogan removes his weight belt and whips Page, who delivers a low blow then takes charge of the belt. Flair runs in to help Page and gets caught between them and whipped as well. He fleas the scene and the match goes back into the ring. Page is ripping at Hogan's face then delivers a swinging neck breaker. Hogan comes back ith a clothesline in the corner. He grabs an abdominal stretch but then is distracted by Flair and releases the hold. Page comes back with a snap suplex. He bulls Hogan into the corner and lays in the elbows. Hogan roars out of the corner and drops several elbows of his own. He is actually showing us some wrestling technique as he grabs an arm wringer then extends the arm of Page. DDP makes another comeback via finger to the eye. Flair is cheering him on. They battle on and on and then suddenly, Hogan is "Hulking up" he puts Page down then Flair runs in and attacks Hogan in the corner. Hogan "Hulks up" some more and ejects Flair then drops the leg on Page. But referee Mickey Jay has been knocked down in the confusion. Charles Robinson runs in but refuses to make the count! Hogan punches him out then goes back to his cover. Mickey Jay revives and administers the count. Fade to black on Hogan's Rant.

RAW Report

A montage of the long running Austin/McMahon feud opens the program which is live from the Continental Airlines Arena in New York City.

Steve Austin makes his triumphant entrance as the new (three time) World Wrestling Federation Champion. He tells us that he managed to check into the Smack Down Hotel and burned that sucker to the ground! He starts criticizing the Title belt, saying it doesn't cut it for him. He invites Vince McMahon to come out and take the belt back! McMahon approaches the ring very cautiously as Austin urges him on. "Trust me", he says...yeah right... He offers McMahon the belt again. McMahon slowly slips into the ring as an "A$$hole" chant starts up. McMahon takes the belt rather gingerly then starts to leave with it. Austin stops him and directs him to watch the TitanTron. We watch McMahon last year, taking Austin's custom made "skull face" belt away from him. He wants his own belt back - but McMahon refuses then reminds him that his (Austin's) contract forbids him the privelege of beating on McMahon without sufficient physical provocation... So Austin shows another clip - this one shows Vince laying the boots to Austin last night at the PPV. Austin declares that that is "sufficient provocation" and McMahon's a$$ is his! McMahon hits Austin with the title belt and runs away. We cut to the back to see various women wrestlers and members of the Ministry arriving. Cut to commercial.

Backstage, McMahon is ordering his daughter Stephanie to call home and get Austin's belt sent to the arena. He has to put Shane in his place when the youngster protests his actions.

Sable makes her entrance and does her usual heels thing. She is here for a tag team match.

Sable/Jaqueline (w/Terri Runnels) vs. Ivory/Tori - Ivory attacks Jacquie as she is being distracted by Tori. She applies a low flying airlane spin then tags Tori in. Ivory suddenly takes off chasing Terri leaving her partner to face the opposition - except that Sable suddenly hits Jacquie with her title belt. Tori gets the pin then the lights go out. Here come thes the Undertaker and his thugs. They trap Sable in the ring and UT tells her "Don't be scared - I came out here to see what you got". She does the grind for him and he grabs her by the throat. He warns McMahon that he can snap her in two. McMahon orders his son and daughter to stay put in the dressing room while he heads for the ring. He pauses on the platform to talk sense to UT - but then he turns and runs toward the back calling his daughter's name. He finds Shane but no sign of Stephanie. He questions Shane frantically as we cut to commercial.

McMahon is freaking out in the back, he is whimpering as he sends Shane out to find his sister. Lawler opines that McMahon realized that the Acolytes weren't in the ring with the Ministry and that is what sent him running back.

X-Pac comes down to the ring to lament the heel turn of his good buddy HHH. He vows to keep Degeneration-X alive. He demans a match against HHH tonight then splits. In the back the phone rings. It's UT and he is taunting Vince about his daughter as we cut to commercial.

Paul "the Big Show" Wight vs. Test - Wight grabs test as he enters the ring and just destroys him - big chokeslam in under a minute tells the tale. Wight rants at McMahon after the match. He doesn't care about Vince's personal problems. He reminds Mcmahon that it was he himself who declared that "everything would change" when the big guy came on board. In the back McMahon is sending Ken Shamrock out to find his daughter as we go to the break.

Shamrock searches the backstage area as we retun.

"Dr. Death" Steve Williams (w/Jim "I want my damn job back" Ross) vs. Hardcore (Steroid Bob) Holly - Harcore Title match - Ross joins the Spanish announcers tonight. Williams attacks on the bell and we are off and running. At ringside JR is harrasing the Spanish announcers who affect to not understand him. The match has moved out to the floor and back inside and things are starting to turn in William's direction as the veteran goes to work on his opponent. Holly escapes and pulls a tanble out from under the ring. He sets it up in the center then goes for Williams, who grabs the initiative and powerslams Holly through the table!! Suddenly, Al Snow runs in and clobbers "Dr. Death" with a frying pan!! Holly takes the pin. In the back, Mr. McMahon is in despair - he tells Shane to take care of things. Cut to commercial.

The Rock (w/Shane McMahon) vs. Billy Gunn - Shane joins the broadcast team for this one. Maivia bulls Billy into the corner to start then moves off and takes a cheap shot. He goes to work on Mr. A$$ but Billy isn't so easily held down. He recovers with a big drop-kick and then an arm bar. He backs him to a corner then kicks him in the solarplexus. The Rock comes back with a DDT and gets a two count. Now it is all Maivia for a while. Billy makes a break for it but gets hotshotted. Maivia takes him out to the floor and rams his head into the announce tables. He dons the headphone for a moment and is ranting when Billy walks over and moons him. The shocked Rock is dragged back to the ring and now Billy has the upperhand...until Maivia catches him in a Rock Bottom. He gets the Corporate Elbow and takes the pin. In the back Mcmahon is sending Shamrock out face...

Gangrel vs. Ken Shamrock - I'm always happy to watch Gangrel work a singles match. I think he is wasted in tag teams with that loser Edge. he dominates Shamrock in the early going. Shamrock finally turns it around with a martial arts kick. He starts demanding "...where is she??" He takes his opponent to the floor and rams his head repeatedly into the stairs then drags him around the ring and posts him. Then he whips him into the stairs and breaks them apart. Back in the ring it's all Shamrock. He makes his demand again as he pounds the dead guy in the face. Now he is just punishing the guy - not trying to take a pin at all. He puts on a belly-to-belly then applies the ankle lock submission. The referee calls for the bell but Shamrock is stil;l wrenching on that leg. The lights go out and the rest of the Brood hits the ring. When the lights come back up, Shamrock has had the bath but he also has Christian in the ankle lock. Christians screams that she's in the basement. Shamrock stalks away, still dripping blood (or whatever it is...) and we cut to commercial.

Shamrock is tearing up the basement as we return. he is not finding Stephanie so far.

The Road Dog vs. Goldust (w/the Blue Meanie) - as the match gets started, Ryan Shamrock shows up. The Meanie intercepts her and sends her away. In the ring, the Dogg is dominating the action. They trade arm bars then James gets a roll-up. He pushes Goldust into the corner and chops him then punches him. Goldust fingers the Champ's eye then sets up the Shattered Dreams but the referee intervenes and allows the Dogg to tag Goldust over his shoulder. The Meanie comes in and gets used as a battering ram against his mentor. Goldy recovers and is on the move again when the meanie reaches up from outside and clocks the Dogg with his own title! Goldust gets the pin! Goldust is the New Intercontinental Champ!! he rants into his "you will never, ever forget the name..." schtick - he says he's found out who he is... In the Basement, Shamrock has found Stephanie. She has charcoal marks on her forehead. he leads her out gently as we cut to commercial.

McMahon is reunited with his daughter backstage as we return.

The Pissed Brothers (w/Debra) vs. The Legion of Doom (w/Paul Ellering) - Tag Team Title match - Animal comes very close to getting a pin about 30 seconds into the match. The Ropadiea are looking good tonight. Jarrett distracts Animal so that Owen can get a spinning round kick to turn the tables. The Tag Champs isolate Animal until he hits them with a double clothesline. LOD set up the Doomsday devise and get it but Debra has the referee distracted as only she can do. Jarrett clobbers Animal with the guitar and it's all over.

A limo arrives backstage with Austin's belt and we cut to commercial.

McMahon is comforting his daughter and thanking his minions for their help. Shane is handed Austin's belt. McMahon isn't interested in it - he tells Shane to just go give Austin the belt. He's taking Stephanie home... After he leaves, Shane sends Shamrock to fetch the Rock - it isn't over as far as Shane is concerned.

X-Pac vs. HHH (w/Shane/Chyna) - I'm not sure what to expect here. Is this a DX scam? Could be. The fight looks real enugh though as the two go after each other. X-Pac's rightious anger puts him in charge at first but HHH cuts him off with a clothesline. He uses his sup[erior weight to good advantage. When X-Pac flies, HHH just side steps him then goes in for the kill. He rushes to the corner and misses to give Waltman his opening. X-Pac is on the move again and evening things up. He gets set for the bronco buster but Shane grabs his leg. He goes out after Shane and is suckered back into a clothesline from Chyna. HHH is setting up the Pedigree when the lights go out. Here comes Kane... He enters the ring followed by Shane who tries to attack but is shrugged off. HHH grabs a chair from ringside while Chyna distracts Kane. Kane gets clocked but then sits right back up. HHH and Chyna split with Kane in pursuit. Sane goes into the ring with a mic...great... He declares that they are going to do things "Shane's way..." - He calls the Rock out - Maivia is wearing Austin's belt over his shoulder. He goes to the ring and puts down Austin who shows up and a melee ensues. Shae is stunned but the Rock gets the upper hand. HHH shows up and joins the fun followed by Test and Shamrock. Finally Paul Wight runs in a cleans house. Austin recovers and the clear the ring together. Austin urges Wight on as he chokeslams HHH. Fade to black...

Both programs were better then average tonight.

At least that's the way I see it...
