Stan Laurel

Dr. Pyckle and Mr. Pride - Comedy masterpiece starring Stan Laurel as the dashing Dr. Pyckle, who transforms into the fiendish Mr. Pride. This hilarious movie from 1925 shows the true genius of Stan Laurel. Before he was paired with Oliver Hardy in the late 1920s, Stan Laurel did solo shorts like this one, much in the style of Fatty Arbuckle or Buster Keaton. These days, Laurel's solo work is often forgotten or overlooked, but this parody is fine example.

Dr. Pyckle and Mr. Pride is a spoof of the 1920 John Barrymore Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. The first half of Pyckle/Pride is a bit slow; then it is just too funny to stop watching. The humour is gentle, playing with expectations about what an "evil fiend" would do and then violating those expectations in very silly ways. Stan Laurel as Mr. Pride is almost unrecognizable and just a stitch!
